Christopher Michlig
(born 1976) Christopher Michlig is a Los Angeles-based artist working in a variety of media ranging from collage to sculpture to film and video. Michlig’s work sets up camp at the intersection of urban space as a planned, legible network of navigable, commercial and cultural spaces, and the interpretability of that space though the visual materials and communication platforms that populate, punctuate and describe it. Reinterpreting and expanding upon ubiquitous public objects such as kiosks, signposts and street posters, his practice activates the language of public space as a site of contestation and latent possibility.
Michlig received an MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California in 2007. Recent exhibitions include Man, Man, Man at devening projects + editions in Chicago and 5+1 at 1000eventi Gallery in Milan, Italy. His solo debut at Jail Gallery was reviewed in the May 2008 issue of Artforum by Jan Tumlir. His work has been featured at the Fellows of Contemporary Art in Yellow, curated by Lia Trinka-Browner, and in the 2006 L.A. Weekly Biennial, curated by Holly Myers and Tom Christie. Michlig’s exhibitions have also included Desertshore, curated by Jan Tumlir at Luckman Gallery at California State University, Los Angeles, and Resist Complacency, Consider Urgency, curated by Sarah Lehrer-
Graiwer at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts in 2009.
