Dorothee Joachim

Dorothee Joachim has worked to develop a concentrated painting process of chromatic layering that results in work that is anything but monochromatic. By slowly veiling highly diluted glazes of primary color on wood panels, she creates rich surfaces and perceptual phenomena that are as much about luminosity as they are about process. In her installations she explores the paintings’ potential interrelations in various architectural contexts.

With her recent exhibition projects in 2011, Dorothee Joachim explored the virulence of her paintings in interaction with spaces beyond the “white cube”. At “Kunstmeile Wangen #4″ in Wangen/Allgäu (May – June 2011), an exhibition project with artists like Joachim Bandau, Petra Herzog, Patrick Rohner and Michel Sauer, she created installations in two entirely different rooms within a building from the 15th century: in the “Grey Saloon”, she set her paintings into relationship with a grey lacquered wood paneling; in the “Wooden Chamber”, a tiny space completely consisting of wood, she installed her works on the wooden walls, letting the colors of her paintings communicate with the shades of paint of the neighborhood buildings you could see from the window, with the exterior setting of this midieval town.

Just for one afternoon in October 2011, Dorothee Joachim presented “IM ROHBAU”, a temporary site-specific painting intervention at a Cologne residential building from 1888 in reconstruction. In cooperation with architect Andrea Wallrath, and accompanied by an artist talk with Jens Peter Koerver, Dorothee Joachim took the challenge to do this installation of her works on bare brick walls and other unusual surfaces, realizing the rough and daring beauty of the construction site. With this temporary intervention, Joachim allowed for a unique collaboration between painting and architecture and it’s different aspects of material and scale; natural changing light situations; and of relationships between the interior and the exterior of the building.

Most recently, the international group show “FARBE JETZT !” at Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung (GKG) in Bonn (www.gkg-bonn.de), January – March 2012, presented a significant selection of Dorothee Joachim’s paintings on the white walls of an art space, giving them the opportunity to communicate with color works by artists like Marcia Hafif (US), Herbert Hamak (D), Christian Keinstar (D), Winston Roeth (US), Katharina Schaerer (F), or Ivar Valgardsson (IS).

In addition to these recent projects, Dorothee Joachim has exhibited her painting widely since the late seventies. Other recent solo exhibitions include installations at devening projects + editions in Chicago, the Brühler Kunstverein in Brühl, Germany, pp projects in Hamburg, and Kunst in NRW in Aachen-Kornelimünster. She recently participated in group shows at Judith Racht Gallery in Harbert, MI, Angle art contemporain in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (F), Halle Zehn in Cologne, Galerie oqbo in Berlin, Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum in Hagen, and Hunter College / Times Square Gallery in New York. Her work is featured in numerous private and public collections including Kolumba and Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Dorothee Joachim lives and works in Cologne.
