Not Just Because
August 28 – October 15, 2016
Opening reception: Sunday, September 18, 4-7 pm

devening projects + editions is very pleased to present NOT JUST BECAUSE, Alain Biltereyst’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The opening on September 18th will also mark the release of his newest 114 page monograph published by Donna Brussels. Please join us for a reception for Alain and Allison Wade on Sunday, from 4 – 7 pm.

Through his solo and group exhibitions and numerous critical reviews and acknowledgements, Alain Biltereyst has been recognized as one our generation’s most innovative painters. Drawing inspiration from urban advertising and typography, mid-century design and early modernist painting, Alain constructs his work with a sense of humility and nuance that reflects his devotion to the history of the discipline and a desire to continually move the medium forward. In his essay for Alain’s newest book, Sam Steverlynck says: “It is precisely the study of signs that runs through Biltereyst’s practice. Representation is not completely banned from his work, but reworked as a fragment, which every now and then permeates, while simultaneously avoiding the trap of the anecdote behind the original source material. This connection to the present is what differentiates Biltereyst’s work from the abstract art of the early last century, which sought to evoke a world of its own, distinctly separate from the existing reality. In his work, we always find a reference, however subtle, to the outside world of the here-and-now. For example, shortly after the banking crisis, the artist painted a series of stylized bank and credit card logos from the minimalist boxed blue diagonal of Deutsche Bank (originally devised by the famous German graphic designer Anton Stankowski) through to a close up fragment of the Visa symbol.”

Alain Biltereyst has been the subject of countless projects, the most recent include solo and group exhibitions at Brand New Gallery, Milan; Nogueras Blanchard, Madrid; Jack Hanley Gallery and Transmitter, New York; Van der Mieden Gallery, Brussels; Gallery De Vos, Aalst, Belgium; Gagosian Gallery and ParisCONCRET, Paris; among many others. Alain Biltereyst lives and works in Brussels.
